What Happens After an Appliance Inspection?

Understanding the Next Step After Your Appliance Diagnosis

When an appliance stops working, most people want a quick answer to one question:

What happens after the technician inspects my appliance?

At Starfix Appliance Repair, we believe customers should understand exactly how the repair process works. Whether you are a homeowner, landlord, or a property manager coordinating appliance repairs, knowing what happens after the inspection can help you make confident decisions.

Below is a clear breakdown of how the process works after your appliance has been inspected.

Step 1 โ€“ The Initial Appliance Inspection ๐Ÿ”Ž

Every professional appliance repair begins with a diagnostic inspection.

During this visit, our technician will:

โ€ข Examine the appliance
โ€ข Run diagnostic tests, if needed
โ€ข Identify the failed component
โ€ข Determine whether the repair can be completed immediately

The inspection fee covers the technician’s travel, testing, and diagnostic expertise required to accurately identify the issue.

Step 2 โ€“ If We Can Fix the Appliance on the First Visit โšก

Our goal is always to fix the appliance during the first visit whenever possible.

If the technician diagnoses the issue and you approve the repair on the spot, we will proceed immediately.

When that happens:

โœ” The repair is completed during the same visit
โœ” The inspection fee is not charged separately
โœ” Only the labour and parts required for the repair are billed

This is why we encourage customers to provide appliance model numbers and accurate descriptions of the problem before the visit.

The more information we have, the better chance we have of completing the repair right away.

Videos of what’s happening with the machine can sometimes help.

You can learn how to help speed this up here:

Step 3 โ€“ When a Repair Cannot Be Completed on the First Visit ๐Ÿ”ง

Sometimes the repair cannot be completed immediately.

This usually happens when:

โ€ข A part must be ordered
โ€ข The appliance requires a manufacturer-specific component
โ€ข The appliance model is older

When this happens, the technician records the diagnosis and submits the repair details to our office.

At that point:

โ€ข The inspection fee becomes due
โ€ข We begin researching the required parts
โ€ข A repair quote is prepared for the customer

This is also why some repairs require a return visit.

You can read more about this here:

๐Ÿ‘‰ https://starfix.ca/general-appliance-repair/why-appliance-repairs-sometimes-require-a-second-visit/

Step 4 โ€“ Our Office Researches the Required Parts ๐Ÿ”

Once the technician returns to the office, our team begins locating the exact parts needed for the repair.

This includes:

โ€ข Identifying the correct manufacturer part number
โ€ข Checking supplier availability
โ€ข Confirming the part cost
โ€ข Determining the labour required for installation

Sometimes the required component is a special order part that must come directly from the manufacturer.

You can read more about this process here:

๐Ÿ‘‰ https://starfix.ca/general-appliance-repair/appliance-special-order-parts/

Step 5 โ€“ We Send You a Repair Quote ๐Ÿ“„

Once the diagnosis and parts research are complete, we send the customer a clear repair quote.

Your quote will outline:

โ€ข The diagnosed problem
โ€ข The required replacement parts
โ€ข The labour required
โ€ข The total repair cost

At this point, the decision is entirely yours.

You can:

โœ” Accept the repair quote
โœ” Decline the repair quote
โœ” Ask questions about the repair

There is never any pressure to proceed.

Step 6 โ€“ If You Accept the Quote โœ”

If you approve the repair quote, we proceed with ordering the required parts.

Important to know:

If the inspection fee from the first visit has been paid, that fee will be deducted from the final repair invoice.

This means you are not paying twice.

Your invoice structure becomes:

Inspection Fee

  • Parts
  • Labour

Minus inspection credit applied to the final repair.

Once the parts arrive, we contact you to schedule the return visit.

Step 7 โ€“ If You Decline the Repair โŒ

If you decide not to move forward with the repair, that is completely fine.

In that situation:

โ€ข The inspection fee simply covers the diagnostic visit
โ€ข No further charges are applied
โ€ข You still receive the professional diagnosis

This gives you the information needed to decide whether to repair or replace the appliance.

If you’re unsure what certain appliance error codes mean before a repair, this guide may help:

Inspection Fee vs Labour Fee โ€“ Understanding the Difference

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

Inspection Fee

โ€ข Covers the technician visit
โ€ข Covers appliance diagnostics, however long or short that is.
โ€ข Applies when the repair cannot be completed immediately
โ€ข Can be credited toward the final repair invoice

Labour Fee

โ€ข Only charged when a repair is actually performed
โ€ข Covers technician time installing parts and completing the repair

Both serve different purposes in the repair process.

Can Customers Supply Their Own Parts?

Another question we often hear is whether customers can provide their own replacement parts.

There are several reasons why this can create delays or complications during repairs.
